These make up the vast majority of pet birds in the United States. They are affordable. They are inexpensively housed. They are frequently good talkers (albeit a tiny voice). And they are usually sociable if given proper care and attention. Parakeets are better known for their talking ability than cockatiels, but cockatiels are hard to beat for their desire to interact with their owners.
